Here I am again with the Thomas talk, but it’s all for good reason. I have to give credit for the Thomas team for blessing us with such a fun morning at the start of the year. The boys got to meet with the Fat Controller on Zoom and, since then, they’ve really grown fond of Thomas and all of his friends.

Around about that time, Cameo found a Thomas game on his Amazon Fire which introduced him to a lot more of the other characters. I like this game because it’s one of the first ones that Cameo plays which allows two players to participate. It’s a simple racing game where he uses his ultra-souped up Streamline Thomas to defeat me, whether I choose James, Nia, Rebecca or any of the other engines in the game.

Onto this book – Ten Little Engines – where we have a fun singalong situation, giving kids the chance to rhyme and singalong with the story as we go from 10 engines right down to one (Thomas, of course). Along the way, each of the other engines disappears off on a journey of their own elsewhere.

This book is great for someone of Cameo’s age, because it’s one that guides him towards learning his subtractions (without him even realising). While it may take him some time to realise that he has a clue in the rhyme about what comes next, he can’t wait to get to the next page to see where the story is going.

Marlo (nearly 3) enjoys this one too, but I would definitely say that this is the kind of book to get a 4-year-old, particularly if you’re trying to drive them towards engaging with maths via baby steps like this.

Perfect for: kids 2-5
